About our Nursery

At our Nursery we offer a nurturing and creative environment. Within this we encourage the children's enjoyment of learning through play and exploration. Nursery sessions are led by a qualified Teacher and supported by Teaching Assistants, who are all passionate about working alongside our very youngest learners.

Throughout their time at our Nursery, children can explore the extensive outdoor areas including Hills and Hollows, as well as entering the indoor world to a classroom that promotes independence and imagination.

Our Nursery is an intrinsic part of our school. They are called 'Ladybirds' - just as the other classes have woodland names throughout the school. The children in Nursery can wear uniform and share some outdoor spaces with Reception class. We see this as a positive way to provide a smooth transition from Nursery to Reception, and ensures that children and their families feel part of the school. The Early Years team work closely together to ensure that learning is continuous and progressive so that the children receive the best start to their educational journey.

We have places available for 3 and 4 year old's and accept both 15 and 30 hours funded. Sessions are either mornings- 8.45am to 11.45am or full day 8.45am - 3.00pm (including lunch).

We can also accept children who may wish to pay to attend Ladybird Nursery if funded hours are being used at another setting. Sessions are charged at £15.00 and are charged weekly via the Pupil Asset Parent Portal.  Non-payment may result in a reduction in hours offered.

Ladybird Nursery - SEND Local Offer

Manor Field Nursery looks to welcome every child and support their needs through a variety of whole setting , group and individual adjustments. The staff work closely with parents and SENDCo to deliver provision. Examples of targeted and specialist provision include core communication boards, signing and simple vocabulary to support a total communication approach as well as curiosity programme and bucket time groups to develop children's attention skill. Each child's needs are considered and children's needs supported through IEP's and positive behaviour support plans as appropriate. These are coproduced with parents and families. Outside agency support is sought from the local authority, speech and language therapists, school2school provision, educational psychologists and STEPS. These links with professional partners are used to strengthen whole setting inclusive practice and develop individual support strategies. Children in nursery also have access to sensory circuits and a specialist sensory room as needed to meet their needs.

A typical day in Nursery

Although no two days are the same at our nursery, here is an example of what might happen during the day.  Our Nursery children are greeted at the gate by their familiar and regular teaching staff. This aids for a smooth handover and the children enjoy walking into school together where they commence their day. We begin with registration and settling in gently, whilst the children explore play.

The children find their names or faces and place them in a basket. We then have carpet time and greet each other singing and signing to the 'Hello song'. We can use this wonderful time to talk about the date and weather. Our carpet sessions range from teaching early reading skills , Math's , enjoying stories and songs, as well as exploring topics close to home and from around the world.   Afterwards, the children can be can be curious and enjoy a balanced range of open ended activities in our indoor or outdoor areas. Open ended activities encourage our children to tap into their innate creativity, whether it's through art, building with blocks or pretending with dolls. These activities allow our children to express themselves and create without limitations. All of our children are a valued part of the Ladybirds family, and so we work together to put all of the resources back where they belong.

We then come together for a social snack time where we talk and listen about our day, our families and other wonderful musings! Respecting children's voices is at the core of empowering their learning experiences. We create an atmosphere of respect within our Nursery. By actively listening to their thoughts, ideas and questions, we foster their sense of belonging, self-confidence and self-worth.  More outdoor play continues where the children can explore the many areas we have, such as Hills and Hollows, and the outdoor classroom space. Our children come together with their friends in other year groups , who often take on the 'buddy' nurturing role looking after our nursery children.

After lunchtime, the children will settle for carpet time where we might share stories, songs, role play or sound work as a consolidation of our learning. The children then get back to exploring through play, together with their friends and key adults always ready to support. There are many variations to our day: each day is carefully planned to support the children in becoming independent and active learners; taking shared responsibility for their times and actions.  In our Nursery we observe and capture, celebrating our children's voices. By observing and documenting their pieces of work, activities and photographs, we as early years practitioners gain a deeper understanding of their learning processes and their achievements. Reflecting on this enables us to recognise and appreciate children's unique perspectives, interests and abilities. It also allows meaningful collaboration with parents and carers, creating a holistic view of children's development.

Preparing for Nursery

Parent, Child and Teacher Meeting

Once your child has been offered a place at Nursery, an appointment will be arranged for a meeting. This is a time for us to begin to learn about each other. We can meet your child on his/her own ground, if you prefer, and talk about the things that will be available to them at Nursery. We can discuss likes and dislikes, special talents and needs. Hopefully it will be a relaxed time for us to answer any queries you might have and so prepare for a happy transition from home to Nursery.

Open Day

We have two open days during the academic year. One in October and one in June.  These are informal drop in sessions for you and your child.

Toilet/Potty Training

We would expect children to be potty/toilet trained prior to starting in Ladybird or well into a potty/toilet training practice unless there is a medical or special educational need. Please speak to a member of staff beforehand if this is the case.
