British Values
We are committed to the active promotion of the five fundamental British values through the Personal Development Curriculum and our curriculum as part of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education:
-
Democracy
-
The rule of law
-
Individual liberty
-
Mutual respect
-
Tolerance of other religions, faiths and beliefs.
We teach the British Values explicitly through Collective Worships, PSHE and incorporate them throughout our curriculum. We try to provide a culturally diverse curriculum though our lesson learning and exploring a range of cultures in our story texts. We adopt non-discriminatory procedures and anti-racist practice.
We encourage democracy through our School Council. We have our own 5 school rules which all staff reinforce, and we teach these explicitly in our collective worships. These are:
- Be kind
- Follow instructions
- Listen to others
- Walk quietly around our school
- Line up smartly
We enable our children to express themselves and understand their individual rights through our PSHE and RSE lessons. We promote respect for all through our 6Rs of learning behaviours which are respect, resilience, reflection, readiness, resourcefulness and responsibility. We explicitly teach about major world religions and faiths beliefs through our RE curriculum. We also aim to invite in guests to school who can help children further understand aspects of all 5 of the British Values.
In actively promoting British Values, we will also focus on, and are able to show how our work with pupils is effective in, embedding fundamental British values. Actively promoting also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views. We provide a culturally diverse curriculum and adopt non-discriminatory procedures and anti-racist practice.
